Coffee has been cultivated on plantations in Vietnam since the mid-1800s, being first introduced by the French. It took a while for production to take off due to initial difficult growing conditions, but by the early 1900s, commercial production was increasing. The years of the Vietnam War took its toll on coffee production, with some of the main coffee growing areas being affected, but eventually, Vietnam’s coffee industry began to flourish again. Coffee production increased significantly after the Doi Moi reforms of 1986, when many new companies with an interest in coffee production were formed. Today, Vietnam is the second highest coffee producing country in the world after Brazil.

The majority of coffee grown in Vietnam is of the Robusta variety, but up to five per cent is the higher quality Arabica. This is grown mainly in the Lam Dong region of the Central Highlands, and the provinces of Thanh Hoa, Quang Tri and Son La in North Vietnam. Over the years, an improvement in farming methods has resulted in higher quality crops being produced. Coffee trees grow in fertile, volcanic soil and the high altitudes allow coffee cherries to develop slowly for optimum flavour and aroma.

Vietnam Arabica is a dark roast that is suitable for use in bean-to-cup, cafetiere, filter and espresso brewing methods.

Coffee is thought to have been grown in Guatemala since the mid-18th century, and was possibly introduced by the Jesuits. Some of the world’s finest coffees are now produced in eight regions of the country, where varying climates and growing conditions result in a diverse range of flavour profiles, from light, sweet and fruity to heavier chocolate and nutty flavours. A high percentage of coffee trees benefit from being grown in andisol: young, fertile soil formed from volcanic ash and lava. As well as this, suitable climates with perfect humidity and ample rainfall help to produce choice Arabica coffee beans with optimum flavour. Most Guatemalan coffees are sun-dried and processed by traditional methods; many coffee farms have wet mills and carry out their own processing.

Guatemala Swiss Water Decaffeinated Coffee is produced using the Swiss Water Decaffeinated Process, a method that removes caffeine from coffee beans whilst keeping their character and flavour intact, in a natural, environmentally friendly way, with no added chemicals. This flavoursome decaf coffee can be enjoyed at any time of the day or evening. It can be roasted to order, with a choice of grind options or whole beans, and delivered directly to your door. It is suitable for all brewing methods.
