Coffee seeds are thought to have been brought to the Dominican Republic from Martinique, by Spanish colonists in the early 18th century. Today, coffee is produced over six regions of the country, being the main crop cultivated on thousands of smallholder farms. Coffee is a well-loved beverage of the inhabitants of the Dominican Republic, and most of the coffee produced is consumed domestically, with just around twenty per cent of it being sold for export.
