Coffee cherries being harvestedSidamo Coffee is a wonderful example of the diverse and characterful coffees that are produced in Ethiopia. This medium-bodied cup is mild in strength, but delivers a fabulous selection of delicious flavours and delightful aromas, with a bright, crisp acidity and soft finish. It is particularly suited for use in cafetière and filter machines.

Sidamo is produced from the finest Arabica coffee beans that are grown exclusively in the Sidama Zone, a region of South Ethiopia that was established after the country became liberated from Italy during World War II. Being one of the main areas used for coffee production, Sidama is a lush and fertile place that is believed to have the perfect climate for coffee cultivation. Heirloom variety trees grow at high altitudes, allowing them to slowly mature and benefit from the rich nutrients in the soil, to develop complex flavours and characteristics. Harvesting takes place between October and January, and coffee cherries are either washed or naturally processed. Sidamo coffee beans are greyish-green in colour, and are smaller and thinner than most other coffee beans. They may be small in size, but these beans are bursting with intense fruity and spicy flavours, hints of chocolate, and distinctive floral notes.

Ethiopia is regarded as being the birthplace of coffee and the place it was first consumed as a beverage. Growing regions include Harar, Limu, and Yirgacheffe, where some of the most notable coffee beans are produced, all revealing a variety of unusual, yet uniformly excellent flavours and aromas typically found in Ethiopian coffees. Basket of coffee cherriesGrown in Ethiopia’s Eastern Highlands, Harrar Longberry Coffee is made from possibly the oldest bean still being produced. It is so named because the beans are characteristically longer and more pointed in shape than other Ethiopian Arabica beans, and are considered to be the finest, reputedly having the most diverse and complex flavours to be found in coffee beans. The trees cultivated to produce Harrar Longberry Coffee are grown at altitudes of around 2,000m above sea level, in a subtropical, highland climate. The coffee cherries are harvested between October and February, and the beans sun-dried before being sorted, predominantly by hand.

Ethiopia is often considered to be the birthplace of coffee as it is believed it was first consumed here. The story of its origins goes back to the 9th century, where legend has it that a Sufi goatherd, named Kaldi, noticed how his goats became lively after eating the red berries from a particular bush, and that when such berries were thrown onto the fire, they produced a wonderful aroma, that prompted experiments into brewing the ground up embers, to mix with hot water for a drink.

Although considered to be mild, Harrar Longberry Coffee carries wonderful berry and chocolatey notes that produce a full-bodied, smooth, and aromatic cup, with medium acidity and no bitterness. It’s little wonder that the complex flavours of these delightful golden coloured beans are sometimes described as unique and unusual.

Tanzania is an East African country that shares its borders with Zambia, Uganda, Mozambique, Rwanda, Burundi, Kenya, Malawi, Democratic Republic of the Congo and the Indian Ocean. It is home to a number of national parks, notably the Serengeti National Park, known for its abundance of wildlife species, as well as the spectacle of the annual wildebeest migration. Swahili is the national language of Tanzania, but there are believed to be more than a hundred languages spoken there.

Coffee is thought to have been first introduced to Tanzania in the 16th century from Ethiopia, and used by the Haya people as a stimulant, that was chewed rather than brewed as a drink. They also used coffee as currency. Arabica seedlings were first cultivated commercially in the early 20th century, when the country was under German colonial rule. After the First World War, the British took control of Tanzania (then called Tanganyika), and in 1961 the country was granted independence. It has taken many years for coffee production to increase in Tanzania and become a successful industry, but now coffee is one of its main agricultural exports, along with tobacco, cashew nuts, tea, cloves and cotton. The Tanzania Coffee Research Institute (TaCRI) was set up almost 20 years ago, with the purpose of rejuvenating the coffee industry by providing advice and education to farmers on advanced technology and best practices in coffee farming. New coffee plants that are resistant to disease have also been planted as part of the initiative.

Most of the coffee produced in Tanzania is grown on smallholder farms in highland regions, where the altitude, mild climate with adequate rainfall, and mineral-rich soil are favourable conditions for growing high quality coffee. Mount Kilimanjaro, Mbeya, Arusha, Ngara, Bukoba, Morogoro and the Usambara Mountains are just some of these areas. Arabica is the predominant crop, but Robusta beans are also grown, particularly in the Kagera region. On many farms coffee plants are intercropped with banana trees, effectively shading them from the harsh rays of the sun.
